Welcome back to my blog series! After my previous interview, I learned about Moeed’s interest, hobbies etc. I considered that he is hardworking and has high aspirations for the future, and was left wondering how he plans to get there. My focus for the second interview was to find out his secrets to success as well as some past accomplishments.
Neuroscience… What Do You Think About That?
What impressed me the most after my first interview was that Moeed wants to study neuroscience. I consider neuroscience a demanding field of study and became curious about his plan to approach it. Anticipating the challenges, he said the hardest part will probably be dedication throughout many years of college to get his M.D. and PH.D, as well as getting into the college of his choice.
Moeed is hardworking, and says his success is due to time management, focus, and commitment. He recognizes he has to get good grades, study, and complete work, even though he sometimes just wants to hang out with friends or play sports. Prioritizing what he “has” to do and what he “wants” to do helps balance his schedule. He comes to school ready to learn and usually a cup of morning tea helps perk him up for the day! Maybe I will try some tea when I am feeling tired…
Catching a Break
Amongst his high aspirations and a busy future of studying, I asked him what the ideal weekend would entail. Saturday would be a free day to hang out with friends, family, or play video games. Sundays are usually his day to get work done, although he would rather be dong some sort of physical activity instead. The perfect weekend includes relaxing and exercising, which are sometimes things that get overlooked during the week. I feel that my weekends run similarly, doing activities that I don’t have time for during the week.
I noticed that he lugs around a giant tennis bag to school, so I wanted to know how often he practiced and what made him interested in the sport. Inspired by his good friend Taher, Moeed took up tennis and practices two to three times a week. The best part is getting to play more when on breaks from school and hang out with his friends.
Biggest Accomplishment
I first asked Moeed about the most rewarding aspect of school. He said it was getting good grades and reflecting on his success. These rewards are what motivate him to push for greater things.
Then I asked him about his biggest accomplishment and was intrigued that it was something different then academics. The most successful moment he remembers was running a 5:46 mile a few years back. (That is an amazing time!!!) He had a hearty breakfast and plenty of water that morning. He strategized his run and then kicked it in the last hundred meters, taking second place. He felt extremely proud because it was a long waited achievement for the training he put in all year. Overall, I think Moeed takes the greatest pride in fulfilling something that took dedication, whether in academics or outside of school.
I never knew about Moeed’s amazing goals and plans for the future! I think the best part of this interview was learning the reasons behind his aspirations and how he keeps himself motivated. From the previous interview I learned how Moeed defines himself; after this second meeting I think I know more about how he hopes to develop his successful identity.
Once again stay tuned for future posts in this series!
