Here’s the Plan
For these next few blog posts I am doing a mini series about differences, perspectives, and ultimately uncovering similarities. The first step in this process was choosing a partner from my class. Then, through some interviews and conversations, I will hopefully learn some more unique qualities about them as well as find what we have in common. So without further a due, let’s meet my partner, Moeed.
What I Already Know and What I Don’t
I have known Moeed for several years and met him first at school. I chose him as my partner because all I really know about him is that he is a hardworking student and plays tennis. Besides sharing a few classes, I’m not sure what else we have in common, or what makes us different for that matter. I hope to find out more about unique traditions and experiences. Ultimately, I hope to explore how differences can be exciting and intriguing.
After Interview #1
The main focus of my first interview was to find out how Moeed defines himself. I asked about some of his favorite experiences and family traditions. In general, he defines himself as athletic, intelligent, and nice. He likes video games and working out. When he grows up he wants to become a physician and study neuroscience. Overall, he values his future and his family.
Speaking of his family, they are from Pakistan. One cultural tradition he mentioned is celebrating Eid. Also, he has travelled to Dubai and said it was the best place he has ever been to! He said that Dubai was the greatest because of the cars, the food, and amazing buildings. I found this to be the most exciting answer of the interview, as I have never travelled abroad before!
Well that was just a snapshot of Moeed to serve as an introduction to this blog series. I think some of the challenges in doing this series will be to come up with insightful questions to truly understand a new perspective, and to keep an open mind when learning about other unique traditions and experiences. To overcome these challenges, I plan on being thoughtful, reflective, and respectful and to keep the project exciting and enriching!
